Фразовый глагол – это глагол со следующим за ним предлогом или наречием, которые придают ему новое значение (то есть значение, отличающееся от значения этого глагола без предлога или наречия). В данной статье мы представляем Вашему вниманию 20 самых распространенных фразовых глаголов английского языка.

 

1)  Give up

If you «give up» doing something, you stop doing it.

Example: She gave up smoking.

 

2) Call off

If you «call off» an event, you cancel it.

Example: They called off the meeting.

 

3) Look after

If you «look after» someone, you take care of them.

Example: He looked after me while I was sick.

 

4) Put off

If you «put something off», you postpone it and do it at a later time.

Example: They put off the tennis match because of the weather.

 

5) Carry on

If you «carry on», you continue doing something.

Example: Carry on doing that until I get back.

 

6) Look forward to

If «you’re looking forward to» something, you are excited and pleased about it.

Example: We’re really looking forward to the trip.

 

7)  Break up

If two people «break up», they stop having a relationship.

Example: They broke up after 3 months together.

 

8) Deal with

If you «deal with» a problem, you try to find a solution to it.

Example: We’re dealing with it.

If someone «passes out», they lose consciousness.

Example: He passed out because it was so hot.

Example: Look it up in the dictionary.

 

11)   Turn into

If something «turns into», it becomes.

Example: The situation soon turned into a nightmare.

 

12)  Hang up

If you «hang up», you end a telephone conversation by putting down the phone.

Example: She wished him a happy birthday then hung up.

 

13)  Call back

If you «call back», you return a telephone call.

Example: I’ll call you back later.

 

14)  Pick up

If you «pick up» something, you take something in your hands.

Example: I picked up the money from the ground then left.

 

15)  Speak up

If you «speak up», you speak more loudly.

Example: Could you speak up, please? I can’t hear you from here.

 

16)  Come up with

If you «come up with», you think of something.

Example: I think we’ve come up with a good solution to the problem.

 

17)  Get along

If you «get along» with someone, you have a good relationship with them.

Example: I get along really well with my brother.

 

18) Make up

If you «make up» something, you invent it.

Example: You made up that story, didn’t you?

 

19)  Turn up

If you «turn up» somewhere, you arrive at that place.

Example: He turned up half-an-hour late.

 

20)End up

If you «end up» somewhere, you arrive at that place eventually.

Example: We ended up at Tom’s house last night.
